Prevent Baby Diaper Rash with a Few Easy Steps

Baby Diaper Rash Baby diaper rash is quite common and there are many things parents can do to prevent and help. To treat a bad diaper rash it is important to act quickly by using natural remedies as soon as redness is noticed.

All babies develop diaper rash now and then, so if your baby has newborn diaper rash do not worry unless it persists and it is making your baby very uncomfortable.

A baby diaper rash is caused by the moist of urine and stool on a very sensitive skin. Acidic stools can cause the baby to develop a very red and inflamed bad diaper rash. When the baby's skin is damaged by the diaper rash, bacteria and yeast can make the rash worse. The most effective way to deal with diaper rash is to prevent it from happening in the first place. If your baby has a simple diaper rash, do not wait until it becomes sever, treat it with a natural diaper rash remedy to avoid complications.

How to Prevent Baby Diaper Rash

Change Diapers Frequently

Change your baby's diaper every two to three hours to prevent urine to stay on your baby's delicate skin. Make the habit to change your baby's diaper after every feed especially if the baby is an infant.

Change Stool Diapers Right Away

Always change a stool diaper as soon as possible, do not allow the acidity of the stool to stay on baby's skin. Some babies have very acidic stools and when they stay on the skin too long they irritate so badly that the skin can crack and bleed. Bleeding diaper rash are very painful and should be looked after right away using a natural diaper rash remedy like Angel Baby Bottom, which contains soothing organic herbal extracts and oils.

How to Wash A Baby With a Bad Diaper Rash

Wash your baby using only a gentle diaper rash soap that does not contain artificial preservatives and that is a toxic-free diaper rash product. When you bath your baby, using soothing bath herbs that speed up healing and add 1 table spoon of oil of olive to your baby water bath water to prevent skin dryness.

Use Cloth Baby Diapers During the Day

Use cloth baby diapers made with organic cotton, bamboo, or hemp fibre that allow air to come in. Cotton diapers work really well to keep baby dry. Bamboo cloth diapers absorb a lot of liquid, while help cloth diapers are very soft, but can be bulky. These types of diapers allow fast healing of baby diaper rash. At night, you may wish to use a chlorine-free, all natural cotton disposable diaper if you baby sleeps through the night and you do not want to wake him up to be changed. If you prefer using cloth baby diapers at night time, make sure to use a diaper cover that allows his skin to breathe. My favourite natural untreated wool diaper cover is called aristocrats. I have used it with my kids and they rarely do have a diaper rash. It is very easy to care for and very soft too.

Use Unscented, Non-toxic, Natural Wipes or Water

The best way to wipe a baby's bum is to use a cotton cloth and simple water. Just water is the only way you can be sure your baby wipes do not have chemicals. If you are travelling, use natural baby wipes. These are less irritating. Read carefully the ingredients of the baby wipes you are using because they can be the cause of your baby's rash.

Avoid the Following Ingredients in Baby Wipes

Benzethonium chloride, Polyethylene glycols (PEGs), Phthalates, which are often ingredients in fragrances, include chemicals that are suspected carcinogens and hormone disruptors, 2-Phenoxyethanol, Chlorine, Dioxin is often present in baby wipes and it is a known carcinogen. Synthetic fragrances can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. If your baby is suffering from eczema, synthetic ingredients can causes and aggravates the issue.

Use Natural Diaper Rash Cream

A natural diaper rash cream should be made with natural ingredients. Babies with sensitive skin may need an organic diaper rash cream with each diaper change. Avoid petroleum jelly or creams containing chemicals because they can be irritants and make things worse. Read the ingredients carefully!

Use a Cream with Zinc Oxide Rarely

An organic diaper rash cream containing zinc oxide works well to soothe a bad diaper rash, but should only be applied when needed, especially if your baby is prone to develop a diaper rash. Do not over use, switch to an all natural diaper rash cream (containing ingredients like Calendula, Vitamin E, Tea Tree Oil, Olive Oil, Emu Oil), when baby's bum is healed. You can use a baby balm that prevent future outbreaks.

Let It Air Out

This is always a good idea, even if your baby does not have recurrent baby diaper rash. Let your baby go with no diaper for a little while every day. Place your baby on a towel and let the baby play without a diaper. Also, if you can place your baby out in the sun for 3-5 minutes a day, the sun light helps heal diaper rash. Remember to stay away from the sun between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Types of Diaper Rash and Diaper Rash Causes

Here are a few diaper rashes that can be more than just irritation from the stool, urine, and diaper. Make sure to talk to a qualified health care practitioner if your baby's diaper is persistent or recurrent to obtain the most appropriate course of therapy for your baby's case. The following are the most common types of severe baby diaper rash.

Yeast Diaper Rash:

This type of baby diaper rash occurs with antibiotic use or prolonged rash. Yeast diaper rash looks like red, raised, patchy rash with sharp borders, mostly over the diaper area. Give your baby acidophilus every day to counteract the effects of yeast and rebuild the intestinal flora with good bacteria. You can give your baby a homeopathic yeast diaper rash remedy like a homeopathic Candida remedy and apply a diaper rash ointment containing tea tree oil.

Bacteria Diaper Rash:

This type of baby diaper rash occurs when bacteria invade the damaged skin. Bacterial diaper rash looks like blisters the size of a coin or like red raised patches that ooze a honey like crust. In this case the baby will need appropriate diagnosis from a paediatrician to make sure there are no other underling diaper rash causes.

Allergy Diaper Rash:

This type of baby diaper rash occurs as a result of ingestion of foods that can irritate baby's bottom, especially acidic foods such as citrus and tomato. This type of rash is common during early introduction of solid foods. In this case do not introduce solid foods until the baby is 7-8 months old and avoid introducing cereals first. Also breastfeeding moms may need to eliminate foods like oranges, tomatoes, apples, dairy product, wheat, from their diet.
