What Is Chinese Cupping Therapy?
Habitually, Cupping Therapy is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
After thousands of years it is till practiced to this day either alone or in combination with acupuncture.
This healing technique consists of creating a vacuum by placing a cupping glass on the skin. The cup creates suction on the skin stimulating blood to flow to the area where the cup is placed. This process helps relieve inflammation in the area of the body were the treatment is applied. Chinese cupping treatment is commonly used to treat lung and respiratory inflammation and congestion, but it is very useful in cases of infertility because it helps detoxify the body.
The following are the main benefits of using Chinese cupping treatment as a form of therapy to increase wellness:
1. Causing tissues to release toxins
2. Activate the lymphatic system
3. Clear colon blockages
4. Stimulate circulation through tissue massage
In ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine, the cups were made of bamboo, animal horns or pottery. Nowadays, practitioners use cups made of glass.
This helps them see how the skin looks like inside of the cup and it gives an idea on how the cupping treatment is proceeding. During a cupping treatment session, the practitioner soaks a cotton ball in alcohol and then creates a vacuum inside of the cup by burning the cotton.
The burning is done in order to use up all the oxygen present inside the cup, this creates a partial vacuum inside of the cup that is then placed on the surface of the skin in a specific acupuncture point accurately chosen by the practitioner.
Under the clear glass cup the practitioner can see how the skin is lifted turning red or purple. It is usually left in place for 10 to 15 minutes depending on the case situation and therapeutic need.
Together with acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping therapy can assist couples who are trying to conceive.
Treatment should take place in the morning when the Qi (Chi) energy is higher and should last for at least 6 months in length.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the human body has energy pathways called "Meridians". Along these meridians, the life force (called Qi or Chi), that enlivens the body, flows freely and nourishes every organ, tissue and every cell along each pathway.
A cupping treatment is usually performed in order to remove stagnant Qi that might block the energy flow through the meridians. Cupping therapy works by reducing the pain and inflammation that is related to the restricted energy flow of the Qi.
There are two main cupping techniques: one where the cups are applied at specific acupuncture points along the meridians and one where they are moved around on the treatment area.
The first type is called simple cupping therapy, while the second is usually called cupping therapy massage.
In cupping therapy, the cups are placed on the skin on specific points to stimulate energy flow and left for a short period of time (5 to 15 minutes).
Here the practitioner uses cupping therapy to give a massage. It is done by applying oil on the skin before placing the cup facilitating a smooth moving of the cup around the area of application.
Cupping can be used on the, back, hips, abdomen, and thighs. The skin will become red with strong cupping massage, indicating that circulation has been brought to the surface, but it will go away soon enough.
This kind of massage is very relaxing and soothing.
Here is a very interesting video showing how cupping treatment works :
Cupping is a safe technique and it cannot be applied on skin that presents a rush or if the person has high fever. It is also not advisable to use cupping therapy on pregnant women.
When you receive a cupping treatment you will not feel any pain just a pulling sensation on your skin where the cup is placed. Many people develop a purplish or red area on each cupping spot.
These marks will clear in a couple of days. Cupping is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Many women prefer cupping over acupuncture because cupping avoids the sensation of the skin being puncture by the acupuncture needle.
Acupuncture should be painless if performed by an expert practitioner.
If you are afraid of needles,
cupping treatment is a very safe alternative.
