High Prolactin Levels
by: Maria Gioia Atzori

Hyperprolactinemia is a condition of elevated serum prolactin. Prolactin is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland related to the production of milk during lactation and the development of breasts during pregnancy.

In non pregnant or lactating women, hyperprolactinaemia may cause production and spontaneous flow of breast milk. When high levels of prolactin are present ovulation is affected causing disruptions in menstrual cycle and inability to get pregnant. In order to achieve conception, day 3 prolactin level should be less than 24 ng/ml.

High levels of prolactin can be linked to problems with the pituitary gland, PCOS, heavy metals, certain drugs, and even taking certain herbal remedies. Talk to your doctor if further testing is required in your case.

Hormonal balance can be achieved through diet, exercise, herbal remedies like Vitex and/or natural progesterone cream.

Vitex can be very effective in treating hyperprolactinemia when related to low progesterone levels causing luteal phase defect. This herb may help lowering prolactin levels, increase progesterone production, improve luteal phase length, address PCOS, and normalize the menstrual cycle.
Many fertility herbal remedies have Vitex as main ingredients and can be very effective in helping women getting pregnant. Read my article on Fertility Herbs.
