Natural Remedies For Colic

Herbs For Colic Babies

Herbs for colic babies are wonderful to help soothe a colicky, crying, inconsolable baby fast. Before the development of modern medicine, herbs were used all the time to treat infants and children. Herbal remedies are a great way to soothe a colicky baby naturally.

Use the flowers of Chamomile and the seeds of Fennel to make a soothing herbal infusion to calm spasmodic conditions caused by colic.

The following tea can be easily made at home and the ingredients can be found easily at any grocery store.

1. Make a tea by crushing 1 tablespoon of Fennel seed in a mortar and add  two tea bags of Chamomile flowers.

2. Steep the herbs in 1 cup of boiling water for 15-20 minutes, strain and let it cool off.

3. Then add 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera juice and give it to baby using a teaspoon or a baby eye dropper. If your baby is very small, it is best to give just a few drops at the time.

You may have some of the tea left over. If so drink it yourself, especially before nursing your baby.

The herbs' properties will be present in your milk and your baby will benefit from it through your breast milk.

Dill, Catnip, lemon balm, caraway, anise seed and Ginger tea are also good herbs for colic. Each makes a great colic remedy to soothe your baby's colic.

These herbs for colic are also rich in minerals, vitamins and important phytochemicals that can help restore a healthy gastro-intestinal system.

List Of Colic Remedies

According to Phytotherapy Research (2005;19:335–40), herbs for colic like Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) reduce baby fussiness.

The following list of herbs for colic babies helps you decide which herb is good for your baby. These herbs can be made into an herbal infusion or tea a single herb or in combination. Let the tea cool down before giving it to your baby using an eye dropper or small spoon.

Chamomile

Of all the herbs for colic out there, Chamomile is the first herbal remedy recommended for colic in baby.

Various parts of the Chamomile plant are used to make herbal remedies, but like to use the flowers for my kids.

I grow my very own Chamomile plants and then dry the flowers and save them in a glass jar, which I store in a dry, dark wooden cabinet will all my other herbal remedies.

When I was a baby, my Mom used to put Chamomile tea in by baby bottle before my afternoon nap with no sugar or honey and I loved it. I still drink Chamomile tea in the afternoon and give it to my kids when fussy.

Chamomile improves digestion, has anti-inflammatory properties, is a nerve tonic, and a sleep aid. Traditionally, Chamomile flowers are steeped into an infusion or tea as a remedy for restlessness, stress, indigestion, abdominal pain, and insomnia. Chamomile is anti- spasmodic and helps muscle relaxation.

Chamomile contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, and vitamin A. For babies, Chamomile tea is also a great eye wash remedy to clean the eyes and prevent infections.

Cautions: Chamomile should not be taken by those who have an allergy to ragweed.

Homeopathic Chamomile

Homeopathic medicines are highly diluted and do not have side effects. They are very easy to administer and work wonders for digestive distress and cramping, gas and irritability in babies and help them with colic pain, teething pains and even fevers.

Fennel

Fennel tea releases abdominal pain, colic pain, gas, and gastro-intestinal tract spasms. It also improves digestion and helps treat acidity in the stomach.

Catnip

Catnip helps release stress, calm an irritable colicky child, aid digestion, stimulate appetite and stimulate sleep. This herb contains many of the B vitamins, vitamin A, sodium, phosphorus, sulphur and many essential oils. Like Chamomile, Catnip is analgesic, helping release pain.

Ginger

Ginger root cleanses the colon, reduces spasms and cramps. Ginger also stimulates blood circulation in the body. It helps for indigestion, motion sickness, nausea and vomiting.

Ginger root should be used in very small amounts. The best way is to cut a few small pieces from fresh Ginger root and add them to Chamomile infusion.

Caraway

Caraway is used to relieve gas in the intestinal tract and gripping cramps in the bowels.

Lemon balm

This herb has a relaxing effect on the nervous system. Like Chamomile helps a baby that is hypersensitive to pain. During a colic episode this herbs helps sedate your baby so he or she will not feel the pain as intensity.

Anise seeds

Anise seeds can be made into a tea to increase your milk production and to alleviate intestinal gas and colic pains in your baby. Make a tea using 1 table spoon of anise seeds.

Dill

Dill is a carminative herb and is used to relieve gas and cramping in the intestinal tract.

Mom & Baby Nursing Tea

I have found that nursing mothers who drink nursing tea can help prevent colic in their baby. The following herbal formula helps both mother and baby and should be taken daily. Star taking it after you give birth to help your milk supply and quality.

The following tea can be taken by both mother and child, if the baby has colic.

You can make your own herbal formula as follows:

Mama And Baby Herbs For Colic Ingredients:

1 ounce of Chamomile flowers
1 ounce of Catnip herb
1 ounce of Lemon balm leaves
1/2 ounce of Fennel seeds
1/4 ounce of Lavender flowers

1. Combine all the above herbs in a dark glass jar.

2. Take 1 table spoon of the tea blend in a tea cup and add 1 cup of boiling water.

3. Cover the cup with a little ceramic plate.

4. Let it steep for about 15 minutes.

5. Wait until it is cool.

6. Feed a few drops to your baby using an eye dropper. Your baby may drink 1/4 to 1/2 a cup. If he or she wants more, it also  Ok. You can add a little maple syrup or cane sugar. Do not add honey, it is not safe for small babies under 12 months.

7. You should drink 4 cups a day.

You will notice that if you drink this tea regularly, your baby will get better and better each day because he receives the herbal remedies through the breast milk.

Your milk will be more nutritious, higher in quality and easier to digest.

If you don't have time to make your own herbal bland, I do recommend Nursing Time Tea, which contains all the best herbs needed for healthy breastfeeding.

The ingredients in this herbal blend are for breastfeeding moms not for babies, like the above formula. Nursing Time Tea has been designed to increase breast milk and to help soothe baby's delicate digestive system.

If contains the following herbs:

 1. Fennel Seeds to increase your milk production and treat digestive problems and colic in your baby.

2.  Anise Seeds to increase your milk production and alleviating gas, colic and indigestion in your baby. Anise seeds also helps clear mucus from air passages and combat infections. Drinking this tea will help prevent cold in you and your baby.

3. Goat's Rue to stimulate the let down, production and flow of breast milk.

4. Blessed Thiestle stimulates milk flow, heals the liver, supports stomach secretions, and purifies the blood. Remember breast milk is simply mother's blood transformed into a nutritious liquid meal. Baby's intestinal tract, due to its immaturity, is sensitive to what you eat. Keep your food clean of junk food. Also, Blessed Thiestle also helps alleviate inflammation, preventing mastitis or plugged ducts.

5. Alfalfa is rich in minerals and vitamins, including vitamin K, which helps baby's blood clotting. Alfalfa is a blood alkalizer helping relieve acidic conditions. It is also a good hormone balancer as it promotes pituitary gland functions. Alfalfa is also good for anemia after childbirth, colon and digestive disorders.

6. Lemon verbena helps you relax and adds a good flavour to the tea.

If you drink Nursing Time Tea daily, you will improve the nutritive qualities of your milk, which in turn will be more easily digested by your baby. Your baby colic will improve fast as a result.

Homeopathic Remedies For Colic

A homeopathic remedy for colic is what many desperate parents seek when they cannot soothe their crying and gassy infants night after night. I will talk about using homeopathic medicine to treat baby colic.

The cause of colic is unknown but it has been suggested that it may be due to acid condition and production of gas that gets trapped in the gastro-intestinal tract.

Colic pain in baby is also associated with a weak digestive system that is in a phase of development, as the baby grows the colic pain diminishes and goes away on its own. Most babies have colic since birth and continue until they are three months old.

How Homeopathy Works

Homeopathy is a very powerful natural healing system of medicine that has been a favorite with the English royal family for many years.

More and more parents turn to homeopathic medicine when their children are ill in order to find a more natural way to deal with minor complaints.

Homeopathy is the first choice because homeopathic remedies don't have the side effects associated with many allopathic medicines. Homeopathic remedies are prepared from highly diluted natural substances and are non-toxic and effective on very small infants and children.

Homeopathy is a therapeutic, scientific method which uses medicines to stimulate the body's natural defence mechanisms.

The homeopathic approach to treating illness is based on the understanding that symptoms are an expression of the body's attempt to correct an imbalance.

Rather than suppressing these symptoms, homeopathic medicines supports the body's efforts to heal itself.

Homeopathic medicines are called remedies and made from natural substances of plant, mineral or animal origin.

In the early nineteenth century German physician Samuel Hahnemann discovered the Law of Similars based on the principle of "like cures like." Homeopathy uses natural substances that, when administered to a healthy person in a crude dose, produce symptoms similar to the condition for which they are treated.

In the case of colic, the homeopath selects a remedy that if taken in high amounts in the crude, non-diluted form will give colicky symptoms to a healthy patient. These is how homeopathic remedies are scientifically proved.

Homeopathic medicines are diluted by a special method called potentization that releases their healing potential of the substance.

The minimum amount is administered and it is called the "minimum dose" because is the minimum amount of homeopathic preparation that can alleviate symptoms without causing side effects.

Is Homeopathy Effective For Colic?

If you have a colicky baby you may have tried al lot of different things and if you are asking yourself if this is worth it, my answer is YES! As a homeopathic practitioner I have seen many babies getting better from using homeopathic medicine. It is important to make sure that the most suitable colic remedy, the one that matches the baby's situation, is selected.

Many parents use over the counter homeopathic remedy for colic great success and others need to have their baby seen by a professional homeopath, which will administer a more suitable colic remedy or a different potency which it cannot be found in stores or online.

Homeopathic practitioners often prescribe constitutional remedies to address underlying weakness and prevent further complications.

If the baby is breastfeed, sometimes the mother is also considered as part of the unit and she may also be given a homeopathic remedy which is most likely the same as the baby's.

Cell Salts also help gassy infants because they address the inability to absorb key important minerals like calcium and magnesium that are responsible for nerve conduction and muscular contraction.

Is Homeopathy Safe For Babies?

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine that is over 200 years old. It is used all around the world and many paediatric physicians in Europe and Asia integrate homeopathic medicine in their practice because homeopathic medicines are safe and non toxic. Homeopathic remedies can be used instead of or alongside conventional medicine in most situations.

Regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada, homeopathic remedies are safe to use, they have no risk of toxicity or overdose, and they are regulated with DINs (drug identification numbers).

Using a homeopathic remedy for colic is a safe solution that may be helpful in managing the challenging symptoms of colic in infants.

How To Take Homeopathic Remedies

A homeopathic remedy for colic is administered when the infant begins a colicky episode.

Select a potency of 6C or 30C. Put 3 pellets in a ½ glass of distilled water, let the pellets dissolve completely, stir 10 times with a clean spoon and administer ½ teaspoon to your baby.

Place the liquid just inside your baby's mouth, to be absorbed by the mucous membranes. Usually the infant will respond in about 5-15 minutes, sometimes very subtly.

If your baby doesn't respond in 15 minutes, re-administer the remedy and wait another 15 minutes.

Give a third dose if needed. If after that you do not see any improvement, you baby may need a different potency (dilution and strength) or a different remedy.

Seek immediate medical care if the colic pain is associated with high pitch cry, stiffness, profuse diarrhea, continuous vomiting, high fever or other intense symptoms.

Sleep Baby System

Bach Remedies For Colic

Treating colic in baby with Bach Flower remedies is based on they recognition that babies with colic may be anxious, stressed and sensitive due to birth trauma, especially if they have been separate from the mother at birth or had invasive treatments like use of suction cup, forceps, C-section, or other.

Babies who did not receive skin-to-skin contact right at birth with their mother suffer from separation anxiety that may manifests more at night when the baby is put down to sleep and when it is dark.

Colic pains can have a mental emotional cause, where the baby unconsciously searches security and comfort when left alone at night.

Co-sleeping can help these babies as Bach Flower Remedies.

None knows for sure how the mental and emotional balance of a newborn baby can have en affect on his physical wellbeing, but we can notice that maternal anxiety is one of the causes of colic in baby.

So, in my opinion the baby senses this instability in the mother or care giver and reacts physically as his mental state is very non-existent at birth.

Bach Flower remedies work wonders for colic in babies when there is a stressful parent and an irritable child. When the colic family is in great distress, Bach Flower Remedies help face the day and night with ease.

Bach remedies do not treat the colic directly because it is a physical ailment, but they do soothe the stress related to the colic attack and the disruption this brings to both baby and parents.

In babies, there is always some degree of shock due to the intense pain they are experiencing, terror for the next attack, panic, and agitation in mom and dad.

Many medical sources will tell parents that there is nothing they can do to treat colic in baby, my experience as a homeopathic practitioner has taught me the contrary.

Natural health has a lot to offer both parents and baby. The difficulty is to find what works for each case. If homeopathic remedies do not help, then try Bach remedies, especially if there is a component of stress in the parents or if the birth was a traumatic one.
