Postpartum Period

Natural Postpartum Healing

The postpartum period can bring some challenges and many new mothers are not prepared. Most prenatal classes offer information and support on pregnancy and on how to care for the baby once he or she arrives, but very little information and support is given for the mother's postpartum period. This is a very important time during which you need to rest and heal.

Postpartum period: What to Expect

If you gave birth naturally, you will have to deal with a sore perineum and if you had a C-section or an episiotomy, you will need to take care of yourself and allow time for your scar to heal. If you are going to breastfeed, your milk will come in within the first 48 hours after birth and you will experience sore nipples the first week or so when the baby nurses.

Postpartum Period Care

The following is a list of things that you might experience and how natural health can help support you in the process of healing:

Postpartum Vaginal Soreness

You might feel a sore perineum while sitting, walking and during urination. This is quite normal and it can last from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Postpartum Bleeding

It is normal to have vaginal bleeding after delivery. The bloody vaginal discharge is commonly called lochia and it will last normally for about six weeks. The first week it will look like a normal period and then it will diminish gradually. You might notice blood clots and cramping during nursing. This is quote normal after delivery, but call your doctor if you develop heavy bleeding, large clots (bigger than a golf ball), and have a fever of 100.4 F (38 C) or higher.

After Pains

After pains are one of those things women are not told before, but they can make your postpartum period difficult you you are not prepare. They felt just like labor uterine contractions and they can be very painful especially if you had previous pregnancies. They can be stronger while the baby nurses and you may feel weak as a result. That is why taking posrtpartum remedies can help prevent or decrease this type of disconfort. Be prepared, read about what natural remedies can do to help your postpartum period.

Healing Herbal Remedies For Postpartum Period

Herbs have been used for centuries by women to deal with postpartum period and its issues. They are great to aid postpartum healing and to help the after pains of childbirth. The following are excellent remedies that have been specifically designed to help heal after giving birth. Please, talk to your health care practitioner before taking any natural remedies during postpartum.

Birth Heal

Birth Heal is an excellent remedy containing herbs, tissue salts and homeopathic preparations which can greatly speed up healing after giving birth. One ingredient is homeopathic Silica, which is used to support healthy skin, to help mineral absorption, to prevent nipple cracks during nursing, to strengthen the connective tissue and to prevent pussy discharges. Another great homeopathic remedy is Arnica, which is very helpful in healing the body after trauma. Magnesia phosphorica is my favourite postpartum remedy because it helps absorb calcium and magnesium and relaxed the uterine muscles during after birth pains. This is also an excellent remedy to soothe the nervous system. The herbal remedies present in this combination are Passiflora, a mood supporter, and Angelica, a great overall hormonal and female reproductive tonic. Birth Heel works well when taken right after giving birth and especially during the first weeks of postpartum.

NewMama Drops

This herbal remedy is made with herbs that will support your body's after postpartum naturally. It contains Angelica sinensis, a great tonic for the female reproductive organs and to maintain hormonal balance, Dill seeds to promote healthy flow of milk in nursing mothers supporting baby's digestive system at the same time, and Ginger to help the uterus to return to its original size. This remedy can be taken for the entire postpartum period of 6 weeks.

Homeopathic Remedies for Postpartum Period

There are many great homeopathic remedies to help deal with postpartum healing. The best homeopathic remedy is Arnica. This remedy is safe, non-toxic and very, very effective. I took Arnica during postpartum and even if I had a small tear I had no pain and I was able to sit comfortably right after birth. The midwife was astonished, she could not believe how well I was feeling after giving birth to a 4300 g baby!

Arnica

Arnica is the most generally used postpartum homeopathic remedy. This remedies is very effective in promoting healing, controlling bleeding, reducing swelling, preventing physical and emotional shock, assisting the uterus contract and preventing infections. In this remedy picture there is weakness, a bruised feeling all over the body, soreness in the perineal area, but also the arms, legs and back feel as if bruised and very lame and sore.

Bellis Perennis

This remedy has an affinity for the soft tissue and brings healing to the abdominal and pelvic internal organs. Like in Arnica, there is soreness and pain in the pelvic area that is felt more internally.

Hypericum

This remedy has a great affinity to the nervous system and it helps especially healing to small nervous fibbers that have been injured as a result of tearing during delivery. This will help soothe the small innervations of your vaginal area. It also soothes sciatic pain as a result of childbirth.

Staphysagria

Excellent for surgical wounds. This remedy helps minimize the pain of incisions following episiotomy or C- section. This remedy also alps for urinary tract infections after delivery.

Magnesia Phosphorica

Very intense uterine muscle contractions with pain and amelioration by warm applications and warm drinks.

Secale

Retained placenta, heavy bleeding and strong spasmodic contractions, aggravated by heat.

Sepia

Bearing down pains, prolapsus and postpartum depression and inability to care for the baby. prefers being left alone. Irritability with loved ones.

Calendula

This remedy is often used because of its antiseptic properties and ability to speed up wound healing and prevent infections. Calendula is great both as homeopathic preparation, taken orally or applied locally on the perineum as herbal tincture diluted in water. Dilute 30 drops of calendula in 250 ml of water, soak a cotton ball and cleanse the area that has scarring or tearing after birth.

Rescue Remedy

This wonderful Bach Flower Essence helps in first aid situations to assist those who feel emotionally stressed out. This remedy will calm you down when agitated or in pain. If you feel like you are going to lose control, this remedy can get you though the bumpy times of motherhood. Do not forget this is called "the postpartum period" because eventually it will end and you will be able to fully enjoy your new baby. You can find Bach Flower Essences to be great to help you get through the postpartum period. I took Rescue Remedy daily for the first week and then I took Olive for mental and physical exhaustion. This Bach flower essence is especially useful if you feel tired, but still have to attend to your baby. I still take it when my kids weak me up in the middle of the night.

Using homeopathic remedies right away will prevent your symptoms to get worse. If in doubt consult with a experienced homeopathic practitioner. Also, rest, rest, rest! and when your baby sleeps, you should also be sleeping!

Postpartum Period and Perineal Healing

A postpartum period recovery kit is a must to every new mom because you will need it! Birth is a natural process, but you will most likely experience a sore perineum, swelling, bruising and burning. The sooner you recover, the more able you will be to enjoy and care for your newborn baby. Many new mom will experience postpartum hemorrhoids, and will feel lots of perineal soreness. If you had a C-section, an episiotomy or tearing you will definitely find relief from a soothing balm that will help restore perineal health right after birth and within the first couple weeks of postpartum.
