Two days ago I have been diagnosed with uterus didelphys.
I want to know if I can have children, what is the risk if I get pregnant?
Didelphys Uterus and PregnancyUterus didelphys is a malformation of the structure of the uterus where the uterus is a paired organ. This defect occurs during embryo development. The woman with this type of uterus has indeed two uterus structures and two separate cervices. Each individual uterus is a single horn connected to a fallopian tube.
Women with the condition often have nor symptoms and some have painful periods and painful urination.
It is possible to get pregnant and to have a healthy baby, but the pregnancy will need to be monitored very closely as there is a higher incidence of breech presentation and premature delivery.
Uterus didelphys is diagnosed through a pelvic examination that will typically reveal a double cervix. Some cases of uterus didelphys may involve duplication of the vagina as well. An ultrasound of the uterus, a transvaginal ultrasound, a MRI and 3D ultrasound techniques are among the type of diagnostic tools utilized to diagnose it.
There is no treatment for uterus didelphys. Women with a double uterus may have difficulty getting pregnant as a result of higher rate of spontaneous abortions, and need special attention during pregnancy and postpartum (increased possibility of haemorrhaging).
There is also a higher risk of multiple pregnancy since each uterus can carry its own separate fetus, which tend to be premature and needing a C-section delivery.
